A Reflection, April 28, 2013

A year ago, Christian was fighting for survival.  I have put off writing this week, because, in all honesty, it hurts too bad to remember....Christian was off the ventilator for a few days after the surgery she had on April 20, 2012.  The therapy was initiated that hopefully would help the blood flow and congestion in her liver, but, of course the results were not immediate.  The few days Christian was off the ventilator were absolutely awful!! She was extremely confused (the confusion was caused by what was going on in her liver)....for her safety and multiple other reasons, Dr. Marvin Hall made the decision late the evening of April 24, 2012, to put Christian back on the ventilator.  It was almost a relief, that was the first night in a few nights that she was able to rest.  Each evening, Chris and I were ask to leave PICU between 6-8pm.  This allowed for shift change and also made us take some time away.  We returned to PICU the night of April 25, 2012 and were told that yet another complication had developed for Christian, an infection in her blood stream...treating this was going to be difficult because her liver was already compromised and the drugs to treat the infection could make everything worse.  This was the first time since diagnosis, the doctor, as kindly as he could say it, told Chris and I that this could be fatal for Christian.  Up until now, I had been really protective of Christian’s privacy and did not really want others to see her on the ventilator, so critically ill...I had to have faith and hope she would fully recover and she would not want to be seen so helpless.  This evening, we called some close friends, and they all came quickly and we surrounded Christian’s bed and we all prayed for healing. From that day on, Bruce Novkov came everyday to pray for Christian...he got to know me very well, I was not always very receptive to his presence, but am thankful that he always came.  This infection, was the third known, life threatening complication since the beginning of March...many more would follow in the weeks ahead.  Christian’s mind was becoming clearer and she would wake up and interact with us some, she got to the point, that we know she knew all of us and would answer questions with shakes of her head, one friend was granted a big smile one day...blessings!

Yesterday, many were running all over the southeast in memory of a loved one...our family participated in The Run for John yesterday.  The Bruner’s have chosen an excellent way to honor John’s memory and to give back to the youth of our community.

Today, a young man is doing a Triathlon in Florida...he is racing in memory of Christian and his father.  Very soon, we will begin planning and we already need to be training for The Christian Bryant Foundation’s big event...The Seven Bridges Marathon/ Four Bridges Half/ Two Bridges 5K that will take place on October 20, 2013....I pray that Team CMB will once again have a huge presence and encourage all around us to continue to “Believe in Possibility” as they run/walk/volunteer to honor the memory of our beautiful, Christian.
